Big Bats Guide 'Cats to Day One Sweep of Wolves

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Central Washington Wildcats softball team came to play and beat the Western Oregon Wolves twice Friday afternoon.

INSIDE THE MATCHUPS:

Game 1
  • Final: Central Washington (2), Western Oregon (1).
  • Records: CWU (12-22, 7-6 GNAC), WOU (18-18, 6-7 GNAC).

Game 2
  • Final: Central Washington (6), Western Oregon (2).
  • Records: CWU (13-22, 8-6 GNAC), WOU (18-19, 6-8 GNAC).
  • Location: Gary & Bobbi Frederick Field, Ellensburg, Wash.

GAME 1:


SCORING:
  • The Wolves started off the series with Bella Valdes scoring on a couple throwing error in the top of the first, making it 1-0 WOU.
  • Brooke Jordan stepped up to the plate and singled up the middle leading Sasha Mitchell home in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at one apiece.
  • Makenna King shot a triple down the right field line getting Kate Hopkins home in the bottom of the fifth to put the 'Cats up 2-1.

PITCHING:
  • Ashlee Laver pitched another complete game for the Wildcats allowing five hits, one run, four walks, and struck out three of the 29 batters faced.
  • Mackenzee Collins was in the circle for the Wolves and pitched the entire game allowing four hits, two runs, two walks, and struck out seven of the 24 batters faced.

HITTING:
  • The Wildcats finished with four hits with Jordan leading with two.
  • King and Alyssa Benthagen each had one hit.
  • The Wolves ended with five hits one each from Victoria Zimmerman, Kate Ronning, Karly Tiedeman, Isabelle Lewis, and Maddie Doig.

GAME 2:

SCORING:
  • The Wolves started the scoring with Natalie Willoughby doubling to right field scoring Lewis in the top of the second immediately followed by Doig doubling in left field allowing Willoughby to score putting WOU up 2-0.
  • Benthagen responded for the Wildcats and smashed one to right field advancing Mitchell to third and allowing Jillian Hampson and Karsyn Decker to score in the bottom of the third tying the game up at two apiece.
  • Serena Perez gave the crimson and black the 3-2 lead when she stepped up to the plates for the Wildcats and hit one down left field allowing Mitchell to run on home still in the bottom of the third.
  • Benthagen stepped back up to the plate in the bottom of the fourth and smashed one right down the center allowing Mitchell and Hampson to score again and increased the 'Cats lead to 5-2.
  • Perez did it again in the sixth inning putting one in left field allowing Hampson to score, making it 6-2 CWU.

PITCHING:
  • Zoey Theophilus was in the circle for the Wildcats and pitched a full seven innings allowing four hits, two runs, two walks, and struck out seven of the 26 batters faced.
  • Erica Soliz pitched six innings for the Wolves allowing nine hits, six runs, five walks, and struck out five of the 34 batters faced.

HITTING:
  • The Wildcats finished with nine hits with Perez leading with three.
  • Benthagen and Decker had two hits each, and King and Hampson each had one.
  • The Wolves finished with four hits and one each from Valdes, Lewis, Willoughby, and Doig.

SERIES HISTORY:
  • The Wildcats and Wolves have met 141 times with WOU owning the series of 71-70.
  • The Wildcats are 35-23 at home.
  • CWU holds the conference record of 58-57.

UP NEXT:
  • The Wildcats and the Wolves will be back in action tomorrow with another double header starting at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. with both games being the annual Gold Star family games, with the Gold Star ceremony set for 12:15 p.m. so make sure to be there!
