Wildcat Softball Drops Pair in Day Two of the CUI Kick-Off Classic

IRVINE, Calif. – The Central Washington University Softball Team suffered a pair of setbacks in day two of the CUI Kick-Off Classic in Southern California on Saturday.
 
INSIDE THE MATCHUPS:
 
GAME 1

GAME 1:
 
SCORING:
 
  • Mia Flores earned her first career Wildcat RBI in the top of the first inning as she singled up the middle to score Karsyn Decker and put CWU up 1-0.
  • The Penguins responded in a big way in the bottom of the first as Marina Medina doubled to center field to score Melissa Garcia and tie things up.
  • Taylor Rodriguez kept it going in the next at-bat as she bunted to score Tiare Guerrero and give DU the 2-1 lead.
  • Medina stole home which was followed by Morgan Saucedo sacrificing herself to the right fielder to make it a 4-1 lead for the Penguins after the first inning.
  • Saucedo tripled in the third inning to score Rodriguez and Medina and make it a 6-1 DU lead.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Taylor Eby doubled to left field to score Morgan Heggstrom and was followed by Leslie Ruiz doubled to score Eby and Alyssa Rue and make it a 9-1 victory for Dominican.
 
HITTING:
 
  • Flores paced the 'Cats with two hits.
  • Brooke Blocker and Decker each tacked on one hit.
  • Flores had the only RBI for the crimson and black.
  • Jessica Reitz-Eaton and Gabi Casco each drew a walk.
  • Medina led the way for DU with three hits while Saucedo had three RBI.
 
PITCHING:
 
  • Zoey Theophilus pitched the 4.2 innings for CWU allowing 10 hits, nine runs eight of which were earned, and one walk while striking out three against 26 batters.
  • Rodriguez pitched the full five innings for the Penguins allowing four hits, one run, and two walks while striking out four against 20 batters.
 
GAME 2:
 
SCORING:
 
  • McKayla Cable earned her first collegiate RBI in the top of the first inning when she doubled to score Decker and Reitz-Eaton and put the 'Cats up 2-0.
  • In the bottom of the first inning, Tiari Hernandez sacrificed herself to the center fielder to score Alexis Oshiro and put HPU on the board.
  • Still in the bottom of the first, Makayla Pagampao doubled to right center field to score Jewel Larson and tie things up at two apiece.
  • The Sharks took the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Savina Molina scored on an error by the CWU catcher.
 
HITTING:
 
  • Decker led the way for the crimson and black with two hits.
  • Reitz-Eaton, Cable, Casco, and Serena Perez all logged one hit apiece.
  • Cable had both RBI for CWU.
  • Adriana Rodriguez drew two walks while Reitz-Eaton drew one.
  • The Sharks were led by Hernandez who had two hits.
 
PITCHING:
 
  • Ellie Gilbert made her collegiate debut pitching the full six innings allowing eight hits, three runs two of which earned, and one walk while striking out two against 28 batters.
  • Layla Molina pitched all seven innings for HPU allowing six hits, two runs, and three walks while striking out four against 27 batters.
 
SERIES HISTORY:
 
  • The series against Dominican is now deadlocked at five games apiece.
  • DU has a two-game win-streak over CWU.
  • This was the two squads first meeting in Irvine.
 
  • The series against HPU is also deadlocked at five games apiece.
  • CWU is 3-2 in neutral site games against the Sharks.
  • This was the first meeting between the two teams in Irvine.

  • The crimson and black wrap up their time at the CUI Kick-Off Classic with a clash against the Otters of Cal State Monterey Bay (1-2) tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. from Field 4 inside Great Park.
