CENTRAL SOCCER POSTS HIGHEST GOAL TOTAL SINCE 2000 IN 8-0 WIN
Wildcats Blast Northwest University to Earn First Win of 2009 KIRKLAND (Sept. 2) -- Sophomore
Serena Tomaso (Enumclaw) recorded her first career hat trick, and senior teammate
Monique Cornier (Puyallup/Emerald Ridge HS) tallied the first two goals of the game to help lead the Central Washington University women's soccer team to its first win of the season, 8-0, over Northwest University on Wednesday afternoon.
With the win, Central improves to 1-3-0 overall. Northwest fell to 0-2-0 with the loss. The eight goals are the most scored by a Wildcat team since Sept. 3, 2000, when CWU defeated Albertson 9-0 in head coach
Michael Farrand's third game at the university.
"We got off to a quick start," Farrand said. "We were able to score three different ways to start the game, which was important since (despite the score) Northwest is a fairly decent team. They (Northwest) worked hard the whole game."
Cornier, who entered Wednesday's contest with just two career points -- both of which were assists last season, spun her defender and then beat Northwest goalkeeper Jessica Kane at the six-minute mark to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. She then added her second tally less just 134 seconds later to extend the margin to two goals.
The Wildcats' third goal of the match came off a corner kick, as sophomore
Katelyn Scobba (Vancouver/Prairie HS) headed the corner by freshman
Mackenzie Holman (East Wenatchee/Eastmont HS) into the net at the 25th minute. The goal was the second of Scobba's career.
In the second half, even with a multitude of substitutions by the Wildcats, Central continued to pepper the Eagles' net and scored five goals on nine shot attempts in the final 45 minutes. All five of the Wildcats' shots on goal found the net, including tallies by Tomaso at the 55th, 60th, and 66th minutes.
"We played many different people in the second half," Farrand said, "and yet we still found ways to score (five goals)."
Also scoring in the second half for the Wildcats were freshman
Carson McKole (Oak Harbor) and sophomore
Brittany Franks (Yakima/West Valley HS). The tally by McKole was the first of her career.
Senior goalkeeper
Amber Easterbrook (Kent/Kentwood HS) posted her 16th career shutout, making just one save on Northwest's five overall shot attempts.
Central Washington will wrap up its season-opening six-match road trip with two matches in Nampa, Idaho, this coming weekend. The Wildcats face Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday (Sept. 5) at 11 a.m. Mountain Daylight Time (10 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time) before facing the University of Mary (N.D.) at the same time on Monday, Sept. 7.
BOX SCORE: Central Washington 8, Northwest 0
