OWINGS MILLS, Md. (May 7) -- Former Central Washington University cornerback/kick returner
Courtney Smith has signed a free-agent contract with the Baltimore Ravens of the National Football League, the club officially announced on Friday.
Smith, who finished his two-year career in Ellensburg this past fall, was one of nine free-agent signings announced by the Ravens on Friday. The 5-foot-11, 195-pound native of Stockton, Calif., will report to the team's minicamp this weekend and has been assigned jersey number 35 with Baltimore.
During his two years at CWU, Smith was a first-team all-Great Northwest Athletic Conference performer at defensive back (2008 and 2009) and as a kick returner (2008). He appeared in 23 games over his two seasons with the Wildcats, totaling 71 tackles, 12 passes defended, two interceptions, and two blocked kicks. Smith also owns the CWU career records for kickoff returns for touchdowns (2) and kickoff return average (29.8 yards per return).
Smith is now one of three former Central Washington University players on National Football League rosters. Former Wildcat quarterbacks Jon Kitna and Mike Reilly are currently with the Dallas Cowboys and Seattle Seahawks, respectively.
