QUICK NOTES
LATE STARTERS: The September 3 season opener is the latest start to the volleyball season for Central Washington since its maiden voyage in the NCAA Division II in 1998. That season, in which the Wildcats finished with a 5-23 overall record, they began the season at a tournament in Davis, Calif., on Sept. 4-5. The last time CWU played as early as Sept. 3 was in 1997, when they visited Portland State for a single best-of-five match.

TOURNAMENT TRIPS TO MONMOUTH USED TO BE COMMON: Central Washington has traveled to Monmouth, Ore., for an in-season tournament many times over the course of its volleyball history, but this year's trip will mark the Wildcats' first tournament visit there in seven years. During their days as a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), CWU would frequent the Willamette Valley for a non-conference, in-season tournament. In fact, the Wildcats played at the Western Oregon Invitational seven times in an eight-year span from 1990-97, and then returned for a tournament visit in 2003. Of course, Central travels to Monmouth for conference matches against Western Oregon annually, as the two have been affiliated with the same conference since both joined the Division II ranks in 1998.

TOP-TEN COMPETITION: This weekend's tournament will give Central Washington arguably its toughest in-season tournament competition in the program's history as three of the Wildcats' four opponents are ranked nationally in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division II top 10. CWU opens with second-ranked Cal State San Bernardino, followed by a bout with eighth-ranked UC San Diego on Friday. Saturday competition will then feature former conference rival Humboldt State and then a showdown with 10th-ranked Metro State (Colo.). Two years ago, CWU played four teams ranked among the top 13, including three in the top 8, at a tournament in St. Paul, Minn.

NEXT ON THE SCHEDULE: The two-day, eight-team tournament will wrap up on Saturday as the Wildcats take on former conference rival Humboldt State at 1 p.m. and 10th-ranked Metro State at 8 p.m. Both matches will be played at Central High School.
