SEATTLE (Nov. 18) -- Central Washington University sophomore Lacy Haddock (Las Vegas, Nev./Sierra Vista HS) scored the game-winning basket with 5.7 seconds left in regulation as the Wildcat men's basketball team upset third-ranked Brigham Young University-Hawai'i 78-77 Friday afternoon in the GNAC/PacWest Challenge at Brougham Pavilion in Seattle.

Central Washington rebounded from an opening-night loss to Warner Pacific last Friday to even its record at 1-1 on the season. BYU-Hawai'i, last season's NCAA Division II runner up, fell to 0-2 on the year.

CWU saw a four-point lead erased in the closing 2:40 of the first half by the Seasiders, who ended the period on a 9-0 run to take a 34-27 lead at the break. BYU-Hawai'i built an 11-point lead less than four minutes into the second half, but a 16-point scoring run by the Wildcats gave Central Washington a 59-55 advantage with nearly 10 minutes left in the contest.

The Wildcats led by as many as six points in the second half, but a late rally by the Seasiders -- capped by a three-pointer by Junior Ale -- gave BYU-Hawai'i a three-point advantage with 1:07 remaining. Central sophomore Kevin Davis (Federal Way/Todd Beamer HS) answered with a tip-dunk with 43 seconds left, and the Wildcats regained possession as they forced Seasider guard Tsung-Hsien “Jet” Chang to turn the ball over with 32 seconds left. That miscue lead to Haddock's lay-in on the baseline in the closing seconds, and a subsequent last-second shot by Chang rimmed off and the Wildcats walked away with the final 78-77 win.

Five different Wildcats scored in double figures, led by senior Jody Johnson (Seattle/Franklin HS) who had a double-double with 10 points and a career-high 17 rebounds. The carom total is the second-highest single-game mark in the school's 14 year history as a member of the NCAA Division II. Davis also recorded a double-double, his second of the season in as many contests, with 13 points and 10 rebounds in just 19 minutes of play. Junior Jordan Starr (Yakima/A.C Davis HS) scored had 12 points, while fellow juniors Jordan Coby (Tacoma/Wilson HS) and Brandon Magee (Spanaway/Bethel HS) each had 11.

BYU-Hawai'i got 21 points from Chang, a pre-season All-American who scored 11 of his points from the free throw line. Bracken Frank finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Seasiders, also adding four steals. Ale and Brady Hurst also scored in double figures for BYUH with 13 and 10 points, respectively.

The Seasiders outscored the Wildcats by 11 points at the free throw line, but the Wildcats converted 20 offensive rebounds into 20 second-chance points. The two teams combined for 35 turnovers with nearly identical totals -- BYU-Hawai'i had 17 turnovers and CWU totaled 18.

Central Washington will wrap up its two-day stay at the Sodexo GNAC/PacWest Challenge on Saturday (Nov. 19) against Hawai'i Pacific University at 3 p.m.
