NAMPA, Idaho (Feb. 19) -- Senior
Torrie Self (Kent/Kent-Meridian HS) was named the top Female Performer, and the Central Washington University men's and women's track and field teams finished third and fifth, respectively, at the 2011 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships that concluded Saturday at Jackson's Track at the Idaho Center.
Self was a two-event winner for the Wildcats, winning the weight throw on Friday and the shot put on Saturday. Only four athletes in the entire championship were multiple-event winners this year.
The CWU men edged championship host Northwest Nazarene by one-half point for third in the team competition, behind Western Oregon and Western Washington. Meanwhile, after a fast start and 60 1/2 team points on Friday, the Wildcat women finished fifth overall with 80 1/2 total points. Seattle Pacific successfully defended its women's indoor conference title.
Sophomores
Anthony Hogan (Federal Way/Todd Beamer HS) and
Katharine Lotze (Benton City/Kiona-Benton HS) joined Self as the only event winners for Central on Saturday, giving the Wildcats a total of six event titles for the two-day championship. Hogan took first in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.42 seconds, while Lotze claimed the women's triple jump with a best mark of 11.71 meters (38 feet, 5 inches).
Earning event crowns for Central on Friday had been Self in the women's weight throw, freshman
Becca Clark (Meridian, Idaho/Meridian Medical Arts Charter HS) in the women's pole vault, and sophomore
Brandon Roddewig (Fall City/Mount Si HS) in the men's pole vault.
The Wildcats' best events on Saturday were the 60-meter hurdles, the men's triple jump, and the women's shot put -- in which they all had at least three top-eight placers. The women's shot put had four CWU finishers in the top eight, including Self and senior
Shaina Afoa (Anchorage, Alaska/A.J. Dimond HS) in first and second, respectively, followed by
Jordan Stueckle (Selah) and
Kaylee Baumstark (Port Angeles) in fourth and sixth, respectively.
