Meet Results (Stanford Invitational)
Meet Results (Spring Break Open)
Senior Torrie Self (Kent/Kent-Meridian HS) improved upon her provisional NCAA Division II national qualifying mark in the women's hammer on Saturday, highlighting a weekend of mixed results for the Central Washington University track and field team at a pair of meets.
Stanford Invitational (Stanford, Calif.)
At the prestigious Stanford Invitational in California, a meet made up of competitors from all levels from Division I to high school, Self came away with the best results among seven Wildcats entered in the meet.
Her throw of 54.32 meters (178 feet, 2 inches) in the hammer on Saturday was the second-best mark of the day in the event. She competed exclusively with Division I throwers in the hammer, finishing second only to Tipaleli Fotu of BYU, who had a winning throw of 55.95 meters (183 feet, 7 inches). Self's mark was just 14 inches shy of her personal best, set last year, and was an improvement of 1.02 meters (3 feet, 4 inches) over her previous season's best from last week.
Self's hammer mark was the only national qualifying mark posted by the Wildcats this weekend, although two of her teammates, men's competitors Anthony Hogan (Federal Way/Todd Beamer) and Manny Melo (Battle Ground), posted season's best marks in the 110-meter hurdles and long jump, respectively. Hogan finished the 110 hurdles in 11th place overall, but he bested the 15-second plateau in the event (14.85) for the first time this year. Meanwhile, Melo posted an improvement of 30 centimeters (1 foot) to earn an automatic qualification into the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championship meet. His mark at Stanford on Friday was 6.58 meters (21 feet, 7 1/4 inches).
Also competing at the Stanford Invite were sophomore Scott Morrison (Hoquiam) in the men's 200- and 400-meter dashes (times of 22.35 and 49.37, respectively), junior Kaitlin Davis (Tumwater) and freshman Becca Clark (Meridian, Idaho/Meridian Medical Arts Charter HS) in the women's pole vault (3.30 meters/10 feet, 10 inches and no-height, respectively), and sophomore Katharine Lotze (Benton City/Kiona-Benton HS) in the women's triple jump (11.19 meters/36 feet, 8 1/2 inches).
Spring Break Open (Seattle)
Wildcat mid-distance runners Nathan Power (Burlington/Burlington-Edison HS) and Scott Power (Burlington/Burlington-Edison HS) brought home first-place finishes, while women's hurdler Chelsea Genther (Burlington/Burlington-Edison HS) was second in the 100-meter hurdles to highlight a stronger contingent of competitors for CWU at the Spring Break Open at Husky Stadium on Saturday.
Nathan Power won the men's 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:09.05, while older brother Scott won the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:26.32. It marked the first race of the outdoor season for their respective events.
Genther, who added a fifth-place finish in the women's 400-meter hurdles with a season's best time of 1:11.13 in that event, was the number-two finisher in the short hurdles race with a time of 15.48 seconds. That 100-meter hurdle time was her fastest automatic time of the season, although she ran a handheld time of 15.4 seconds at the PLU Invitational two weeks ago.
The only other mark to meet either an automatic or provisional qualifying standard as a season's best mark on Saturday was posted by sophomore Brandon Roddewig (Fall City/Mount Si HS) in the 110-meter hurdles. Roddewig, who made his 2011 debut in the event on Saturday, became the fifth CWU athlete to meet the GNAC provisional standard in the 110 hurdles this spring with his time of 16.03 seconds. Roddewig placed third in Saturday's meet in the event.
Jason Caryl (Omak) competed in a team-high four events on Saturday, placing as high as fifth in the long jump. He was seventh in the 110 hurdles, eighth in the long jump, and ninth in the 100-meter dash.
Only five CWU women competed at the Spring Break Open on Saturday. Genther, freshman Alexis Ramos (Shoreline/Shorecrest HS), and junior Siri Berg (Burien/Highline HS), all competed in two women's events, while freshman Taylor Kartes (Federal Way/Todd Beamer HS) and sophomore Chelsea Padrta (Spokane/Mount Spokane HS) were one-event entrants in the 800-meter dash and 400-meter hurdles, respectively.
Central Washington is expected to send a full contingent to the JD Shotwell Invitational at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma next weekend. The Wildcats' lone home meet of the 2011 season is three weeks away, as they host the Spike Arlt Invitational at Tomlinson Stadium on Apr. 16.
