BELLINGHAM (Apr. 8) -- Central Washington University sophomores Brandon Roddewig (Fall City/Mount Si HS) and Jason Caryl (Omak) went down to the wire on Friday, with Roddewig edging Caryl for first place at the two-day WWU Multi-Events at Civic Stadium in Bellingham.
Roddewig, who trailed Caryl by nearly 300 points after five events, gained nearly 200 points each on his teammate in both the 110-meter hurdles and the pole vault on Friday to finish with a 60-point win (5,989 to 5,929) over Caryl. That duo led a quintet of Wildcats among the top seven in the decathlon.
Places four through six in the decathlon were separated by just 22 points, as sophomore Scott Hunter (Hilo, Hawaii) totaled 5,562 points and edged teammate Andrew Venema (Bickleton), who was fifth with 5,547. The margin between Venema and sixth-place finisher Tim Clendaniel of Western Washington was even narrower, however, as Clendaniel finished just seven points behind Venema with 5,540 points over the ten-event meet.
Sophomore Thomas Steinke (Leavenworth/Cascade HS) rounded out the Wildcats' dominance in the decathlon, finishing seventh with 5,288 points.
Meanwhile, in the women's heptathlon that also concluded Friday, junior Siri Berg (Burien/Highline HS) placed fourth and freshman teammate Melanie Davis (Pasco) was ninth in the first heptathlon of her collegiate career.
Berg moved up one spot from her day-one placing to finish fourth among the nine competitors. She totaled 3,427 points over the seven events to finish with a 148-point cushion ahead of Brooklyn Holton of Western Washington, who had entered the day in second place. Rachelle Barnett of Simon Fraser broke the 4,000-point plateau and won the heptathlon with 4,034 total points.
The majority of the CWU track and field team will head east to Spokane to compete in the WAR IV meet at Spokane Falls Community College on Saturday. The Wildcats will then have their lone home meet of the 2011 season next Saturday (Apr. 16) as they host the Spike Arlt Invitational at Tomlinson Stadium, with the first event scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
