ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Oct. 26) -- Sophomore
RACHEL HANSES (Yakima/West Valley HS) led all players with 14 kills, and the Central Washington University volleyball team completed a road sweep of the Alaska schools with a 25-23, 25-14, 25-20 win over the University of Alaska Anchorage on Saturday night at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
The Wildcats improved to 11-8 overall and 7-4 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play, extending their win streak to five matches in the process. UAA suffered its second straight home loss, falling to 15-8 overall and 9-2 in the conference.
"I was proud of our defensive and passing effort," CWU head coach
Mario Andaya said. "Rachel (Hanses) and Emmy (Dolan) both converted points efficiently for us after we dug the ball, and Catie (Fry) set a balanced offense on serve receive."
Hanses had at least four kills in each of the three sets, including six kills in the second as CWU cruised to an 11-point victory in that frame. Alaska Anchorage committed 10 hitting errors in the second set to aid the Wildcats' blowout win, which the visitors capped with a 17-5 scoring run.
CWU then finished off the sweep by leading nearly from start-to-finish in the third set, breaking a 1-1 tie with three straight points and never trailing in the 25-20 victory.
The Wildcats' serve receive allowed just two aces to Alaska Anchorage on Saturday, and CWU finished with 60 digs in the three-set match. Junior defensive specialist
LAUREN HERSETH (Olympia) had a match-high 16 digs, while junior libero
KAELY KIGHT (Spokane/Mead HS) finished with 14 to key the passing efforts. Senior
ERIN SMITH (Selah) had four blocks and was one of four players to finish with exactly seven kills to complement Hanses' team-leading total in that department. Sophomore setter
CATIE FRY (Tacoma/Mount Si HS) finished with 37 assists.
Joining Smith with seven kills were senior
EMMY DOLAN (Castle Rock), sophomore
KAITLIN QUIRK (Ellensburg), and freshman
JORDAN DEMING (Hillsboro, Ore./Century HS).
Alaska Anchorage was led by the 11-kill, 12-dig double-double of Katelynn Zanders. Erin Braun added seven kills for the Seawolves, while Quinn Barker led UAA with 14 digs.
CWU returns home next weekend, taking on rival Western Washington University on Thursday (Oct. 31) and Simon Fraser on Saturday (Nov. 2), with both matches slated for 7 p.m.
