The Central Washington University football team will look to even its overall winning record at 2-2 when the Wildcats visit the newest member of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, Azusa Pacific University, tonight for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff at Citrus Stadium in Glendora, Calif.
The Wildcats' two losses this season have been by identical 21-14 scores against Texas A&M University-Kingsville (Sept. 7) and Simon Fraser University (Sept. 21). CWU earned its only win of the season against Western Oregon University in its GNAC opener, 20-7, on Sept. 14 at Tomlinson Stadium.
Azusa Pacific is 2-1 overall and is tied for first with a 2-0 conference record. The Cougars' lone loss of the season came at nationally-ranked Grand Valley State (Mich.) in the season opener, following that contest with wins at Dixie State (36-20) and at home against Humboldt State (28-2).
Tonight's game will be the first of five away contests for the Wildcats. It also marks the first of back-to-back contests in the state of California, as CWU visits Humboldt State University next Saturday (Oct. 5). The Wildcats' next home game is Oct. 12, when they host Dixie State University for Homecoming.
All-time, CWU holds a 5-2 lead in the series with Azusa Pacific. The two teams are former regional rivals from their days as members of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), playing three times combined in the 1997 and 1998 seasons before the Wildcats moved to the NCAA Division II. APU is in its second year of provisional membership with the NCAA Division II this season. The two teams split their meetings last season, with CWU winning 41-17 at Bothell on Sept. 22, 2012, before the Cougars claimed a 24-17 win in Glendora four weeks later (Oct. 20).
John Picha (1-2, first year as head coach) will lead the Wildcats into battle with the Cougars for the first time in the series history, although the 25th-year member of the CWU coaching staff has been a part of all seven previous series meetings as an assistant coach. He will be opposed on the sidelines by Victor Santa Cruz (35-43, eighth year), who has guided the Cougars to six consecutive GNAC victories between the end of 2012 and the beginning of 2013.
