Monmouth, Ore (Oct. 16) – For the second time this season, the Central Washington University women's soccer teamed completed a match with Western Oregon University in a 0-0 draw.
The tie keeps the Wildcats record at 5-6-2 overall and 4-3-2 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, earning a much-needed point to maintain their hold in the GNAC standings. The Wolves stay at 5-4-5 overall and 3-1-4 in the GNAC.
The Wildcats outshot the Wolves 16 to 15 on the day. Seven of those shots came in the first period.
"We started out a little slower than I would have liked," Head Coach
Michael Farrand said. "We finally got back into the game later in the first half. The defense picked up for us."
Both teams had equal opportunities throughout the second half. The Wolves took one more corner than the Wildcats at 5-4.
"I thought the play of our backline was real good today," Farrand said. "
Allie Bohnett (Gig Harbor, WA, Gig Harbor),
Abbie Litka (Issaquah, WA, Skyline ),
Meghan Ward (Chehalis, WA, W.F. West), and
Aubrey Rodgers (Puyallup, WA, Emerald Ridge) continue to step up for us back there."
Senior keeper
Kayla Lipston recorded her fourth shutout in her last five games, finishing with nine saves on the day.
A bizarre play occurred in the final seconds of the game when the Wildcats mounted an attack looking for the win. As the clock reached the finals seconds the Wildcats scored a goal that would be called back.
"It was the right call," Farrand explained. "We kicked the ball at one second and the game had ended by the time it crossed the line."
Hadli Farrand almost ended the game during overtime when she broke free and redirected a corner high over the post.
"We had some great chances in the second half and overtimes," Farrnad explained. "Our defense is really playing well and we need our offense to answer the call."
The Wildcats will continue their road trip when they travel to Saint Martin's University this Saturday, Oct. 18. The game is set to begin at 3 p.m.
"It's always tough to play down here, historically it's a struggle," Farrand said. "Sometimes to just get a point down here is a win. But, we can't keep dropping points if we want to be one of the top four teams in the GNAC."
