Corvallis, Ore (Oct. 18) – The Central Washington University women's rugby team went 2-2 at the Oregon State 7's qualifier tournament losing twice to the University of California.
The Wildcats opened the day with a close 17-19 loss to UC.
Rosalind Pena (Bronx, NY) led CWU in game one with two tries and
Queen Fina Toetuu (San Ramon, CA) scored one herself.
"It's not the outcome we wanted," Head Coach
Mel Denham said. "But, for only having one week of 7's under our belt it was a good start."
The Wildcats would rebound from the early loss with two victories over Washington State University and Oregon State University.
Ashley Rolsma (Covington, WA) led the Wildcats in the second game. She found the try zone three separate times as CWU would score 36 points.
Cassidy Meyers (Covington, WA) converted three conversions and finished the day with six total.
Defense was the name of the of the game in game three, the Wildcats limited the Beavers to only one try and one conversion in the game.
Mele Halahuni (Kent, WA) led CWU with two scores as Meyers and
Asinate Serevi (Seattle, WA) chipped in with one a piece.
"We were able to improve each game," Denham said. "Cal had a lot of speed and they were a great match up for us."
In the quarterfinal rematch, UC defeated CWU 31-22.
Jennifer Johnson (Kent, WA) found the try zone twice in the loss.
"Being challenged is the only way we will grow," Denham added. "We grew today."
