Box Score ARCATA, Calif. (Oct. 25) — Central Washington University cornerback
Isaiah Davis came up with an interception on Humboldt State University's first pass of its first offensive possession. And the Wildcats turned that into the game's first points. But, the Lumberjacks regained the momentum and came away with a 38-20 victory Saturday night before 1,989 fans at the Redwood Bowl.
Davis' pick was his third of the year and No. 15 of the season for the Wildcats, who lead the GNAC and are among the nation's NCAA Division II leaders in that category. CWU running back
Jordan Todd quickly capitalized on the mistake with a 30-yard touchdown run, the first of his two scoring runs on the night.
"I bounced outside then I came back in," Todd explained. "My lineman just kept coming. They opened a hole and I just hit it and went. There were some pretty good blocks."
Todd led the Wildcats with 82 yards on 15 carries and the two scores, including a second from two-yards out.
But, Humboldt would mount a comeback. It was aided by back-to-back CWU second-quarter possessions that ended on an interception and a lost fumble, which allowed HSU to take a 17-13 lead into halftime.
"We found ways to shoot ourselves in the foot with turnovers," said CWU's first-year head coach
Ian Shoemaker. "Some of them were forced, some of them were unforced, which are the one's we need to clean up."
The CWU offense continued to struggle in the second half, including giving up third-quarter fumble at the Wildcats 16-yard line. It led to another Lumberjacks' score.
"At times, our defense played great," Shoemaker added. "We just continued to put them in bad situations with three-and-outs and not enough rest. That's going to provide a good offense, like Humboldt, with opportunities to score."
Humboldt's offense was led by running back Nick Ricciardulli, who carried the ball 27 times for 178 yards. He also caught a two–yard TD pass.
"He's a small guy, but a strong runner," CWU safety
DeAndre Baines acknowledged. Baines had 10 tackles, one for loss, for the Wildcats. CWU's defense was led by middle linebacker
Kevin Haynes, who had 11 tackles.
Jeremiah Maluia and Silas Sarvinski led the Lumberjacks with eight tackles apiece.
"Their defense was fast and rallied to the ball," Todd said. "But I feel we have the potential to be much better than how we played."
The next chance CWU has to show that is Saturday when the Wildcats host Lincoln University of Missouri. It will be the final regular season home game for CWU. The Senior Day kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Tomlinson Stadium.
