ELLENSBURG, Wash (Oct. 4) – The Central Washington University women's soccer team battled to a double overtime tie with Western Oregon University that concluded in a 0-0 tie.
The Wildcats earned a much needed point in the draw and moves their recorded to 4-5-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. The Wolves remain idle at 4-4-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the GNAC. Central Washington extends their point streak to three games in a row as they maintain their hold of third place in the GNAC standings.
The Wildcats commanded the first half of play outshooting the Wolves 12 to 4.
Mackenzie Nolte (Marysville, WA, Marysville-Pilchuck ) applied pressure early totaling four shots, three of them testing the Wolves' keeper.
"I thought we controlled the game and created enough chances," Head Coach
Michael Farrand said. "We were playing attacking soccer and thought we should of put the game away early."
The best scoring opportunity for the Wildcats came in the 42
nd minute when
Hadli Farrand (Ellensburg, WA, Ellensburg) eluded two Wolves defenders and ripped a strike that bounded of the crossbar. It was hard to tell which sound was louder, the groan from the 204 fans in attendance or the low drum created from the shot.
The game wound down to the final seconds of regulation as both teams prepared for golden goal soccer.
In the first seconds of the first overtime,
Lauren Duty (Black Diamond, WA, Tahoma) beat her defender down the left flank of the pitch and ripped a bending shot that beat the Wolves' keeper but sailed past the top right corner of the goal.
"We controlled the pace of the game today. We are a little bit of hot and cold," Farrand explained. "We have made progress over the last couple of weeks with two wins, a tie and a loss."
Kayla Lipston recorded her second shutout in as many games. Lipston recorded six saves for the game.
The Wildcats will take the field again next Thursday, Oct. 9 at the CWU Soccer Complex versus Northwest Nazarene University.
"Western Oregon is a tough team," Farrand added. "It's always a good game. That's the thing about conference games, they are always big games."
