ELLENSBURG, Wash (Nov. 1) – The Central Washington University women's soccer team concluded their season with a tough, 1-0, loss versus Seattle Pacific University.
The loss concludes the Wildcats' regular season record at 8-7-3 overall, and 7-4-3 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, as the Falcons finish 11-4-2, and 9-3-2 in conference.
The day began with the Wildcats celebrating the careers of
Kayla Lipston,
Danielle Brandli,
Kindra Scobba and
Hadli Farrand.
"We have such a great senior class, and this group of girls has so much potential," Lipston said. "The freshman have really stepped up for us this year and everyone can see how good they are going to be."
Lipston finished the day with five saves on ten Falcon shots. The one that got away occurred in the 62
nd minute as the GNAC goals leader, Hannah Huesers, eluded two Wildcat defenders on a 50-yard run that began a midfield and ended with score that beat Lipston to her right.
The Wildcats spent the second half looking to equalize. They outshot the Falcons seven to five in the second half as well as winning three corner kicks to SPU's two.
The best chance happened on a corner kick, late in the second half, that found the heads of two Wildcats, and ended with
Whitney Lowe narrowly missing the inside of the left post and a diving keeper.
"We didn't quite focus enough in the beginning of the game," Head Coach
Michael Farrand said. "But we solved it, and came back in the second half and got better as the game went on. We equaled them in shots and the keeper and two great saves in the back end of the second half. We are in a good spot heading forward."
The Wildcats are locked in as the fourth seed in the 2014 GNAC Tournament that will be played in Tukwila, Wash. They will battle Western Washington University in the first round, Nov. 6.
"We had a great game over there against Western," Farrand said referencing his team's 0-0 draw with WWU last week. "We got some great things out of this game today in terms of possession and counter attacks. We'll get back and train this week and get ready for the matchup. We got to get Western."
