ELLENSBURG, Wash (Nov. 15) – The Central Washington University women's rugby team defeat Washington State University by a score of 41-5, behind excellent team play.
The Wildcats spent most of the first half in Cougars' territory. Britt Zier got the Cats on the board in the 8
th minute when she muscled her way into the try zone. She would finish the day with two tries of her own, as
Katerina Long converted all of her first half possessions.
"We were really implementing everything we have been working on in practice," First year Head Coach
Mel Denham said. "We really were trying to play as a team instead of individuals, and I think that really showed today."
Central Washington controlled the pace of play and connected multiple times on effective possessions leading to four first half tries.
Asinate Serevi and
Mele Halahuni each record a try in the first half, as the Wildcats went into half time with a 26-0 lead.
"We were working on maintaining possessions through multiple phases and to get some attacks going with some pace to get them on their back foot." Denham said.
The Wildcats opened up the second half with a quick score from the first of two
Jennifer Johnson tries in the half.
The Cougars finally found the tryzone late in the half as the Wildcat defense played stingy all day.
"The back line really lit it up today and played well all day," Denham added.
Up next for the Wildcat is the University of Oregon. Game time will be announced later in the week. The game will be played at the CWU Rugby Pitch, Nov. 22.
"We are still continuing to build on what we set out in our structure from the beginning of the season," Dehman said. "We want to finish strong and hopefully, really solidify that foundation set out and continue to build up some of the new players and finish this season strong."
