Courtney Johnson scored a game-high 18 points and recorded her first double-double of the season as the women's basketball team defeated Concordia University 54-36 Saturday night in Nicholson Pavilion.
The Wildcats are now 6-2 on the young season with just two more non-conference games left to play. Concordia loses for the second time this seasons and sits at 7-2.
Courtney Johnson was red-hot in the first half scoring 13 points and made all five of her shots, including three from behind the arc. As a team the Wildcats shot 37.9 percentage in the half and held the cavaliers to a 28.0 shooting percentage. The Wildcat defense was swarmed Concordia in the stanza forcing 15 first-half turnovers, 10 of which came on steals.
The Wildcats created a large gap for themselves in the first half going on a 20-9 run in the final 10:33 to take a 29-16 lead going into intermission.
The Wildcats continued the run to start the second half started by a pair of layups by
Jasmine Parker and
Jasmin Edwards coupled by a three pointer by
Melanie Valdez pushing the Wildcat lead to 18 at 36-18. The Cavaliers got as close as 14 in the contest but the Wildcats never let them get any closer Leading by as many as 20 points finishing the contest with the 54-36 victory.
Freshman point guard
Jasmin Edwards scored 15 points and added three rebounds and three assists. In addition to Johnsons 19 points she added 10 rebounds and four steals.
The Wildcat defense held the high scoring Cavaliers to 28.9 percent shooting and nearly 30 fewer points than their season average. The Wildcats forced a season high 24 turnovers with 12 steals.
Central Washington will next travel to Billings, Mont. to faceoff with Montana Tech and South Dakota Mines on December 18 and 19.
