BOTHELL, Wash. (Sept. 27) — Central Washngton University defensive back Cedrique Chaney (6-0, 197, Jr., Kelso) blocked a Simon Fraser University punt that wide receiver Austin Pernell (5-9, 200, Fr. Kent) recovered and took in for a 20-yard, first-quarter touchdown. Chaney followed that up just 99-second later with a five-yard, blocked-punt recovery for a score, to help Central Washington University to a 63-7 triumph over Simon Fraser University in the inaugural
Battle for the Border clash, presented by the Washington National Guard, at Bothell's Pop Keeney Stadium.
The two special teams scores followed a CWU touchdown on its opening drive of the game that propelled the Wildcats to a 21-0 advantage with 9:13 remaining in the first period.
"We came out on a roll with those two blocked punts and the big play to [Greg] Logan at the start of the game," said first-year CWU head coach Ian Shoemaker.
Logan (5-10, 181, Sr. Graham/Graham-Kapowsin) made eight grabs for 167 yards, including his first TD reception of the season. He entered the game as the No. 1 receiver in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, and ranked 17th nationally, with 22 receptions. His 56 yard catch, to set up the Wildcats' first score, was the team's long pass play of the season.
"It's my coaches and my teammates putting me in great positions [to be successful]," Logan said. "We've got a great system working. We've got something clicking."
Simon Fraaser would answer on a 10-play, 77-yard scoring drive that cut the lead to 21-7 with 32 seconds left in the opening quarter. But that was the last the Clan would score.CWU came right back on a 9-play, 65-yard touchdown drive, followed by a 16-play, 95-yard scoring march, and an 11-play, 85-yard TD effort that put the Wildcat up 35-7 at half. The scoring onslaught continued in the second half, including with three rushing touchdowns, two by Jordan Todd (5-6, 180, Jr., Bellevue/Interlake) and a third by Ishmael Stinson (5-11, 200, Sr,. Gig Harbor/Charles Wright Academy), who was playing his first game of the 2014 season. And what a way to start. Stinson led all ground gainers with 117 yards on 11 carries. Todd, who broke the 2,000 yard rushing mark for his CWU career, recorded 59 yards total.
The ground game augmented a passing attack led by quarterback Jake Nelson (6-2, 210, So., Lake Stevens), who connected on 15 of 25 passes for 288 yards and three touchdowns, including two to in the second half to Jesse Zalk (5-8, 160, So., Battle Ground/Prairie).
The defense also got into the scoring act with a 78-yard interception return for a score by true freshman Deion Stell (5-10, 166, Marysville/Marysville-Pilchuck).
"The defense played great tonight," said Shoemaker. "No. 35 [Stell] had two interceptions, which was big for us."
The Wildcats also unveiled their entirely black uniforms at the game, which had been kept secret from the players.
"Those were some clean uniforms we had out there tonight," Logan said. "It was pretty cool."
With the victory, CWU improved to 2-2 on the season and 1-0 in GNAC play, as the contest was the first conference counting game this season. Next week, CWU returns home to host Azusa Pacific University, which was ranked No. 1 in the GNAC preseason coaches' poll. The Wildcats were picked second.
