ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Jan. 3) – The Central Washington University women's basketball team traveled to play third-ranked Alaska Anchorage and suffered an 80-57 defeat to the host Seawolves Saturday evening in Anchorage.
The Wildcats have now fallen to 7-5 on the season and an even 2-2 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. Alaska Anchorage is 13-1 on the season, 3-1 in the GNAC.
The Wildcats jumped out to an early 7-5 four of which came from
Courtney Johnson who scored six points in the opening stanza. The lead would be short lived as the Seawolves went on a 27-4 run to take a 32-11 lead with 9:17 left in the period. The Wildcat offense eventually found a rhythm and ended the half with a 39.1 shooting percentage, but trailed the Seawolves 43-28.
Alaska Anchorage shot 45.5 percent from the field in the first half where they forced 18 Wildcat turnover that they converted into 25 points.
The second half was more of the same as UAA used a 17-3 run to break open a 70-41 lead with over eight minutes remaining in the contest. The Seawolves led by as many as 30 points in the second half before walking away with the final 80-57 advantage.
Turnovers and rebounds were the story of the game as UAA forced CWU into 29 miscues, 14 of which coming from steals. Alaska Anchorage scored 32 points on turnovers and outrebounded the Wildcats 43-31. Twenty of the Seawolves rebounds were on the offensive end which resulted in 23 second chance points.
Johnson was the lone Wildcat to score in double-figures with 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting.

India Matheson each scored seven points, with Matheson hauling down a team high seven rebounds.
Anchorage was led by KeKe Wright who scored 18 points missing just one of her 11 shots on the evening while grabbing eight rebounds.
Next up the Wildcats return home to play Western Washington on Jan. 8 and Simon Fraser on Jan. 10. Central Washington is a perfect 5-0 at home so far this season.
