BURNABY, B.C. – The Central Washington University volleyball team set a school record for the most blocks in a game (21) en route to a 3-2 victory (25-21, 16-25, 25-22, 20-25, 15-12) over Simon Fraser University. The Wildcats improve to 13-6 overall and 9-2 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play. Simon Fraser falls to 9-10 with a 5-6 record in GNAC matches.
Sabrina Wheelhouse was involved in 12 blocks, setting a Central Washington record for most blocks in a five-set match by an individual player.
The Wildcats picked up points in bunches during the first set, recording two or more consecutive points six times. Central closed the first set with a kill by
Linden Firethorne.
Firethorne finished the match with a team high 14 kills. She also notched 17 digs and three block assists.
The Clan found points in bunches during the second set, leveling the match with a 25-16 set win.
Momentum swung back to Central Washington in the third set. Trailing 9-8, Central recorded five consecutive points for a 13-9 lead. The Clan took the next three points, cutting the Wildcats' lead to 14-12. The two sides alternated points until CWU notched four straight points, gaining a 20-15 advantage.
With the set score 24-18 in favor of Central Washington, SFU battled back with four consecutive points before the Wildcats' claimed the set on a kill by
Rachel Hanses.
In the fourth set, CWU held a tight 19-17 lead. Simon Fraser took a one-point lead after pulling in three consecutive points, but the Wildcats evened the set on the next point, 20-20.
The Clan took the next five points for a 25-20 set win and leveling the match at 2-2.
Simon Fraser reached the eight-point mark first in the fifth set, but the Wildcats did not allow the Clan to hold the lead. Central recorded three straight points, taking a 10-8 advantage.
The Clan soon after evened the set at 11-11, before the Wildcats outscored SFU in the match's final five points 4-1.
Kiah Jones finished with 11 kills, while
Madison Weg added nine.
Kaitlin Quirk picked up eight kills and eight blocks assists.
Catie Fry dished out 41 assists. Defensively, she picked up eight block assists and 12 digs.
Lindsey Milner led the Wildcats with 23 digs.
The Wildcats remain on the road for their next match against Western Washington on Saturday. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. and concludes CWU's four-match road trip.
