ELLENSBURG, Wash (Oct. 22) – The Central Washington University women's rugby team will play a pair of matches this coming weekend on the Wildcat Rugby Pitch beginning with a rematch of last season's spring championship final versus Brigham Young University (BYU) Saturday, Oct. 24., followed by a Sunday matchup versus Western Washington University.
The Wildcats defeated the Cougars last April, winning 29-15 to advance to the National Championships versus Penn State. The Wildcats are preparing for their third varsity match in a seven day span.
"The team is feeling fresh after our recovery on Monday," Head coach
Mel Denham said. "I am confident we are ready to perform this weekend."
The Wildcats should be ready to perform this weekend as they are coming off an impressive road trip that witnessed two key victories versus Norwich University and Quinnipiac University last weekend. Central Washington outscored its opponents 99-34. The Cougars have a big bite as well as they are fresh off an impressive 90-5 win over the University of New Mexico last week.
"Expect a fast and physical rematch of the 2015 Spring Championship Final," Denham said. "The biggest impact will be our ability to execute our game plan as a team, under pressure, preforming under pressure, and maintaining a cool head will be the biggest factor for us."
Kick off for Saturday's match is set for 11 a.m. The match will be ticketed.
"Having these competitive matches week after week is what our goal was when planning the schedule," Denham added. "It's the only way to develop and to support the varsity movement. Building this relationship with BYU is wonderful, because they are a bus drive away and we can set up competitive matches with each other easily and consistently. This should be a great match."
