BELMONT, Cali (Nov. 20) – The Central Washington University women's basketball team took the first of two games this weekend in Belmont, Cali defeating Notre Dame De Namur by a score of 80 to 49.
The Wildcats improve to 3-0 on the young season and will battle the Academy of Art tomorrow, Saturday Nov. 21. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
The Wildcats opened the first quarter of play missing three of their first four shots but
Alexis Berrysmith got the Wildcats on the board with a layup in the paint. She would finish the game with 12 points and four rebounds. Berrysmith struck again when she converted an and-one play to tie the game at 5-5 at the 7:34 mark. The Wildcats closed the quarter on a 14-6 run and with the lead, 19-11.
The second quarter was a stalemate until freshman
Mandy Steward nailed a three-point shot to inflate the Wildcats' lead to 22-11. Neither team scored until Stewards' shot at the 7:45 mark. Steward finished the game with a career-high 10 points. The Wildcats used a balanced attack in the second period as seven different Wildcats scored. The Wildcats went into the break leading the Argonauts 36-18.
Central Washington used the strength of their post players to begin the third quarter.
Jasmine Parker scored the first basket of the frame, as Berrysmith and
India Matheson scored the next two to give the Wildcats a 42-24 lead. Parker led all scorers with 13 points and finished with eight rebounds. The Wildcats continued to apply the pressure for the remainder of the game as the Wildcats shot a stellar 55.6 percent (30-54) from the field and a staggering 60 percent (6-10) from behind the arc.
The Wildcats forced 16 Argonaut turnovers, which led to 22 points, and found 45 points from their bench.
