Football Battles Back to Defeat Simon Fraser 30-24

BURNABY, B.C. Canada (Nov. 6) -- The Central Washington University football team outscored Simon Fraser 14-3 in the fourth quarter to escape Canada with a 30-24 victory, snapping a three-game losing streak.

The Wildcats improve to 4-5 on the season and 2-3 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.  Simon Fraser remains winless on the season at 0-8, 0-5 in the GNAC.

Central Washington trailed 21-16 heading into the fourth quarter, but the Wildcats used a combination of big plays and staunch defense to pull out the victory.

CWU quarterback Justin Lane, who had thrown for 300 yards in each of the last three games, did not hit that mark again in this contest but was instrumental in the Wildcats comeback throwing for 264 yards and the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Lane's biggest target was Justin Peterson who had a career high of 151 yards receiving on eight catches, with seven grabs in the second half including four in the Wildcats final scoring drive.

Quincy Carter ran for just 51 yards on 17 totes, but two of those carries found the end zone for the Wildcats to ran for 78 yards in the game.

Defensively Kevin Haynes led the Wildcats with 12 tackles, seven solo, followed by Mitch Haldane with nine.

The Wildcat defense, which came up clutch in the second half, got two turnovers off interceptions by Jackson Huerta and Myles Carelock.

Simon Fraser outgained the Wildcats 381 to 342, with the big difference in the game coming on a 95-yard kickoff return by Jesse Zalk in the third quarter.

On CWU's first drive the Wildcats got three-points on a 39 yard field goal set up by a 23 yard pass from Lane to Kyle Self.  The McDonald field goal was the only score in the first quarter.

The Clan gained its first lead of the game on the first play of the second quarter, rushing four yards to the end zone to take a 7-0 lead.

Midway through the second quarter McDonald set up for a long field goal that was blocked by Simon Fraser and returned to give the Clan a new drive start at the CWU 50 yards line.

Jackson Huerta make sure CWU would get the ball back, intercepting a SFU pass deep in the Wildcats territory, however, two plays later Lane was intercepted by the Clan giving the home team the ball back at the SFU 45.

The Wildcat defense stayed strong, forcing a punt and started their final drive of the quarter at the deep in the Wildcats territory at the 3-yard line with just over 2-minutes left in the half.

Lane connected with Jesse Zalk to convert a much-needed first down.  Lane then connected with Justin Peterson for 16 yards and another first down as the Wildcats implemented the two-minute offense with a minute left in the half.

Central Washington continued to drive down the field as Lane again found Self on a 25-yard strike down to the SFU 30-yard line.  Lane found Self again, setting up a 42-yard field goal attempt by McDonald that missed just to the left, leading to a halftime score of 7-3 in favor of SFU.

Zalk started tings off well in the second half, returning the kickoff 47 yards to the SFU 35-yard line.  Two plays later Zalk earned a CWU first down on a 10-yard pass from Lane.

Zalk continued to help CWU drive down the field taking a short pass down to the SFU 3-yard line.  On the very next play, Quincy Carter powered his way into the end zone, and after McDonald missed the PAT the Wildcats led 9-7.

The Clan responded with a 75-yard touchdown pass on third and long to take a 14-9 lead

The Clan followed up that drive by taking the ball 68 yard on six plays ending in a 12-yard touchdown run to take a 21-9 lead with 4:37 left in the third quarter.

Zalk continued to put the Wildcats on his back by returning the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown cutting the SFU lead to 21-16.

After the CWU defense forced a punt, lane found Justin Peterson on back-to-back receptions of 23 and 24 yards, respectively, landing the Wildcats on the SFU three-yard line to end the third quarter.

Carter opened the fourth quarter with a three-yard touchdown, and after a failed two-point conversion the Wildcats led 22-21 with 14:54 left in the contest.

Simon Fraser took a long drive down the field, consisting of 10 plays ending in a 43-yard field goal to give the Clan a 24-21 lead with 11:23 remaining.

Peterson and Lane hook up again with connections of 16 and 18 yards to put CWU in SFU territory.  The duo continued to wreak havoc on the SFU secondary as Lane found Peterson for a 32 yard touchdown, and the pair connected again on the two-point conversion to give CWU a 30-24 lead with 9:53 left.

The Central Washington defense remained stout in the fourth quarter forcing a pair of punts and CWU had the ball on its own five-yard line with 4:35 to go in regulation.

The Wildcat offense stalled out and SFU regained possession with 2:04 left in the game.

Central Washington forced a fourth and six but a pass interference penalty gave SFU life with 54 seconds left.

Myles Carelock ended the Clan's attempt to take the lead with an interception near the end zone with 31 seconds left.  The Wildcats lined up in victory formation and ended the contest with the 30-24 victory.

The Wildcats will conclude their 2015 season at home next week (Nov. 14) as they take on Dixie State at Noon.  This game will also be the final home game for a handful of CWU seniors.
