SAN LEANDRO, Calif. (Feb. 22) -- The Central Washington University offense erupted to score 13 runs in game one as the softball team defeated Holy Names 13-1. The Wildcats rallied to tie game two in the seventh inning but lost 6-5 with the Hawks taking advantage of CWU fielding errors.
With the split the Wildcats move to 6-3 on the season, and the Hawks pick up their first win of 2015 and are now 1-7.
Game One – 13 to 1 Win Sammy Morris led off the game with a double and eventually scored on a wild pitch, putting the Wildcats up 1-0 in the first inning.
The score remained the same until the Central Washington offense unleashed in the third inning scoring six times on six hits.
Remy Bradley, and Morris each had RBI singles in the inning, while
Celine Fowler and
Taylor Ferleman both doubled.
The Wildcats matched the third inning by scoring six more times in the fifth. True freshman
Taelor Griffin singled in her first collegiate at bat plating Ferleman, and sophomore outfielder
Haley Fritz got her first start of the season and drove in three runs in the six on a double to left center.
Wildcats' starting pitcher
Kiana Wood (3-0) made quick work of the Hawks for the majority of the game, holding Holy Names to just two hits through four innings. In the fifth the Hawks pieced together three two out hits to score their lone run of the contest.
The Wildcats outhit the Hawks 17-5 with ten different batters recording a hit. Morris was a perfecet 4 for 4 with two RBI and three runs scored.
Austin Wilkerson and
Remy Bradley both had two hits and freshman
Celine Fowler was 3 for 3.
Sixteen different Wildcats saw playing time in game one with three players (Griffin, Fritz and
Amanda Hopkins) making their 2015 debuts.
Game Two – 6 to 5 Loss The first four innings of the second game went by fast with both teams recording just one hit in the process. In the fourth inning, the Hawks took advantage of a pair of CWU errors to score three runs off CWU start
Lindsey Kamphuis and take a 3-0 lead.
The Wildcats responded in the top half of the fifth with a RBI single by Fowler and a sac fly by Morris that scored
Shelby Yasuda, to cut the HNU advantage to 3-2. The following inning Fritz tied the game up scoring Campbell.
The Hawks came back in the bottom of the sixth scoring two more runs on three hits to regain the lead at 5-3 heading into the seventh.
The relentless Wildcats tied the game up in the top of the seventh with RBI singles by Ferleman and Campbell that plated Fowler and Morris.
Unfortunately, errors plagued the Wildcats once again as Holy Names was able to score off the CWU miscues in the bottom of the seventh, winning the contest 6-5.
The Wildcats finish up their six-game California road trip with another twinbill with Academy of Art tomorrow starting at 11 a.m.
