BRISBANE, Calif. (Feb. 23) -- The Central Washington University softball team lost both of its games against Academy of Art Monday afternoon (2-5, 7-8). The Wildcats committed a total of eight errors in the two games, which led to six total runs for the Urban Nights.
The Wildcats have lost three straight and are now 6-5 on the season. The Urban Nights improve to 9-3.
Game One – 5-2 Loss The Wildcat defense put CWU in a hole to start the opener. Academy of Art scored three unearned runs in the third inning due to three consecutive errors by the Wildcat infield.
The Wildcat offense chipped away at the early 3-0 disadvantage scoring a run in the fourth inning on a
Kiana Wood double that scored
Andrea Hamada, and again in the fifth when Hamada was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
The Wildcats went hitless the rest of the way and Wood (3-1) suffered her first loss of 2015.
The Wildcats were outhit 6 to 5 and the Urban Night defense was flawless with no errors while the Wildcats had four.
Game Two – 8-7 Loss For the third game in a row, the Wildcats gave away runs on costly errors. The Urban Nights scored four runs in the first four innings, with only three of which were earned runs with CWU committing three errors in the process. Central had four total errors in the game, each of which helped Academy of Art score runs.
The Wildcats wouldn't go down without a fight. In the third they pieced together two runs on RBI singles by
Austin Wilkerson and
Michaela Hazlett. Central Washington took its first lead of the game in the fourth scoring four runs on two hits, with
Kailyn Campbell and
Alexa Olague both driving in two runs on singles to left centerfield.
The lead did not last long as the Urban Nights scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 7-6 lead. The home team added another run in the sixth inning to up its advantage to 8-6 heading into the final inning.
The Wildcats made things interesting with when
Taylor Ferleman doubled down the right field line scoring
Sammy Morris. With the tying run on second, Campbell, who was 3 for 5 in the game, popped out to the pitcher to end the game.
