PULLMAN, Wash. (Feb. 28) -- The Central Washington University women's rugby team scored 19 unanswered points in the first half and earned a 31-19 victory over Washington State University Saturday afternoon.
Â
The match went scoreless for nearly 20 minutes before CWU's
Cassidy Meyers reached the try zone to break up the 0-0 tie. After a
Katerina Long's first of three conversions on the day the Wildcat took a 7-0 lead.
Â
Just five minutes later Meyers would score again followed by a
Heather Johnson try 10 minutes later as the Wildcats went into halftime up 19-0 over the Cougars.
Â
"We worked hard on obtaining and keeping possession and we did that pretty well." Â CWU Head Coach Melanie Denham said. Â "Cassidy [Meyers] was able to find some gaps in the defense and capitalized on it."
Â
The Wildcats found the try zone twice more in the second half with
Rosalind Pena and
Asinate Serevi crossing the line within five minutes of each other.
Â
The Cougars didn't go down without a fight, outscoring the Wildcats 19-12 in the second half, but it wasn't enough as the Wildcats finished the match with the 31-19 win.
Â
"We made some adjustments in the second half, and we have some work to do defensively. "Denham added. "They [Washington State] did a good job of exploiting those weaknesses, which made for a very competitive second half."
Â
Up next, the women's rugby team will host Oregon State University next Saturday on the Wildcat Rugby Pitch.Â
