ELLENSBURG, Wash. (Mar. 21) – The Central Washington University softball team was outscored 36-16 by Saint Martin's University, losing both of its contests with the Saints Saturday afternoon by scores of 19-7 and 17-9.
The Wildcats came into the game with the possibility of taking over first place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, but with the losses they are now 12-9 on the season and 6-4 in the GNAC. Saint Martin's improved to 21-12, 7-1 in the GNAC.
The Wildcats were outhit 19-13 in the opener, with 10 of the Saints' hits coming in the seventh inning where they scored 11 runs. The first 12 batters reached base safely in the inning and the Saints capped off the big inning with a grand slam by catcher Jackie Schmaeling.
The Central Washington offense was productive in the twinbill with 25 total hits, 14 of which came from the top half of the lineup.
The Wildcat defense had a rough day with seven total errors, which allowed the Saints to score a total of eight unearned runs, four in each contest.
Lindsey Kamphuis, who pitched in both contests, saw her earned run average rise from 2.54 to 3.38 after giving up 11 earned runs in the opener.
