ELLENSBURG, Wash (March 7) – The Central Washington University women's rugby team celebrated Senior Day by recognizing
Heather Johnson and Britteny Zier for their contributions to the rugby program, and then the Wildcats went on to shutout Oregon State University by a score of 115-0.
The Wildcats found the try zone quick, so quick that it took only 48 seconds to register the first five points of the match.
Cassidy Meyers scurried her way into the try zone off the opening kickoff and then kicked one of 10 two-point conversions on the afternoon to give the home team a 7-0 lead.
"In the first half there were a lot of individual efforts that created individual try's," Head coach
Mel Denham said. "Against stronger teams we wont get away with that. The second half we came out playing as a team within our system and were able to create more scoring opportunities."
The win moves the Wildcats to 8-0 on the season, as they remain a perfect 5-0 while playing on home turf.
Asinate Serevi built the Wildcat lead to 29-0 in the 23
rd minute when she caught a switch from Meyers to spring her free as she gashed the Beaver's defense up the middle.
Mele Halahuni followed suit two minutes later to inflate the Wildcat lead to 34-0 with her second try of the day. Halahuni would lead the Wildcats with three first half trys and record a total of four scores on the day.
The Wildcats went into the break leading the Beavers 50-0.
The second half saw nine different Wildcats find the try zone, as the team would score 11 trys in the period.
Heather Johnson scored her second try of the day in the 22
nd minute of play.
"Heather, our single gradating senior on the current roster played her heart out today on that pitch," Denham said. "Heather has made massive contributions to the program's success on and off the field and has been a member of the team since her freshman year when it was a club team. Heather will be missed greatly next fall, and I believe everyone left a little out there for her today. Also graduating and a member of the team from the start is Brittney Zier who played last fall with us. She was in the stands cheering the team on, as she had to make a tough decision to commit to her student teaching this quarter. She has been missed this winter, and will also be missed next year."
Suliana Tausinga put the finishing touches on the game as she recorded the final two scores of the day in the 35
th and 40
th minute of play.
"Mental skills are a continual work in progress for us, which we train for," Denham added. "We take our mindset pre-, during, and post-match seriously. I'm sure now, recovery is on their minds so we can be back at it and focused next week.
The Wildcats will take the pitch again when they travel to Seattle, WA to battle the Seattle Saracens, March 21.
