Palo Alto, Cali (April. 11) – The Central Washington University women's rugby team earned a win versus the University of California Davis in the Pacific Mountain Conference Regional Tournament Round of 16 by defeating the Aggies by a score of 47-3.
With the win, the Wildcats will battle the winner of Stanford University vs. Washington State University, Sunday, April. 12, at 3:15 p.m. on the campus of Stanford University as the winner will advance to Nationals set to be held in Pittsburgh, PA.
"We played to our plan as a team and were able to generate good scoring opportunities," CWU Head Coach
Mel Denham said. "We spent a lot of time working on our defence which the team committed to."
The Wildcats struck first in the 10
th minute when
Heather Johnson scored one of her two trys of the day to give CWU a 5-0 lead before
Katerina Long tacked on two more points with a successful conversion. Long would finish with six conversion kicks on the day.
The Wildcats doubled their lead when
Jennifer Johnson surged into the try zone with the help of a scrum and another Long two-point conversion increased the lead to 14-0.
Central Washington would go into the break with the 14-0 lead.
The Aggies got onto the board early in the second half on a penalty kick, but that would be the last time UC Davis would score.
Angela Ve'evalu touched down in the try zone three times in the second half to give Ve'evalu her second hat-trick in as many games versus UC Davis.
