ELLENSBURG, Wash. (April 24) – The Central Washington University women's rugby season has landed them in position to possibly play for a national championship in just their first season as a varsity sport under the tutelage of first year head coach Mel Denham.
 
The rugby team is in the semifinals of the Spring Championships where they face fellow first year varsity program Life University today in Pittsburgh, PA at 2:45 PDT.  The winner of this game will face the either BYU of West Chester for a chance to face Fall champion Penn State for the National Championship on May 9 in Atlanta, GA.
 
The Wildcats ran through the Pacific Mountain Rugby Conference tournament defeating Chico State 101-0, and UC Davis twice by scores of 57-10 and 43-7.  This led them to the PMRC Championship against third-ranked Stanford, a game that was thought to be a tight fought battle.  However, the Wildcats showed they are more than capable of competing for a National title running through Stanford 53-7 to punch their ticket to Pittsburgh.
 
Leading the charge offensively for the Wildcats in the PMRC tournament was Angela Ve'Evalu and Heather Johnson who scored five and four tries respectively.
 
But it has been the solid defensive front for the Wildcats that has allowed the team to hold their last four opponents to an average of five points per contest. 
 
The Wildcats will need to fire on all cylinders this weekend, something they have shown they are more than capable of doing.
 
With a win the Wildcats will play at Saturday at 1:00 PDT for a chance to play Penn State, and if they lose they will play a consolation match at 11:15 PDT.
