LACEY, Wash. (April 25) – The Central Washington University baseball team split their double header with the Saint Martin's (SMU) Saints Saturday afternoon taking the first game 2-0, but dropped the nightcap 1-0. The Wildcats record moves to 21-24 and 12-18 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) play.
Left-hander
Zach Johnson, once again, was textbook. Johnson went the distance in the nine-inning contest in which he scattered three hits and only needed 101 pitches to do so. The Wildcats ace struck out four and faced 28 batters, one above the minimum. Johnson also induced 15 flyouts.
Central Washington couldn't muster much offense, but it wasn't needed due to Johnson's stellar performance. The Wildcats plated two runs in the fourth inning when
Benjamin Dunbar singled home
Myles Wesener and one batter later,
Randy Fuller singled home Dunbar.
Game two was also a pitcher's duel that featured
Mitch Yada and Torin Dooley for SMU; the game lasted just one hour and twenty minutes. Yada struck out eight and surrendered only one extra base hit. Dooley left with one out to go in the seven-inning game, but he hurled 6.2 shutout innings and held the Wildcat bats to just four hits.
The lone run was score by Blake Lord who came in on a Michael Agate single.
The final GNAC playoff spot is still up for grabs, as Montana State Billings and Western Oregon have clinched a berth to the tournament; Billings currently holds the number one seed. The Wildcats face an uphill battle and will need two win both their games tomorrow against SMU and hope Northwest Nazarene loses each of its next six games.
