ELLENSBURG, Wash. (Sept. 11) – The Central Washington University volleyball team lost just one set Friday, winning both of its contests and improving its record to an even 3-3 on the season. The Wildcats defeated Fresno Pacific 3-0 (25-23,25-16,25-11) in their first game, and capped the day with a 3-1 win over Dixie State (25-18,26-24,24-26,25-22).
In the opener the Wildcats posted a .292 hitting percentage, outhitting the Sunbirds by over .150.
Linden Firethorne led the Wildcats with 11 kills while hitting .391.
Kaitlin Quirk added nine kills while hitting.438 and added four two blocks. Setter
Catie Fry accumulated 35 assists on the Wildcats 42 kills in the match.
Central Washington's back row showed major improvement having just two reception errors. Freshman
Shelby Mauritson and
Lindsey Milner each had seven digs in the contests.
In the Wildcats' second game, they got a huge boost from middle blocker
Sabrina Wheelhouse who poured in 12 kills in 19 attempts posting a .579 hitting percentage. The sophomore also added 3.5 blocks. Firethorne led CWU with 15 kills. Defensively Milner dug out 23 balls followed by
Jordan Deming and Fry with 12 and 11, respectively.
Once, again the Wildcat defense set the tone in the game with only three return errors while the Red Storm had 10. Quirk spearheaded the work at the net, totaling eight total blocks.
The Wildcats will wrap up the GNAC/PacWest Tournament tomorrow when they play BYU-Hawaii at 7:30 p.m. in Nicholson Pavilion.
