ELLENSBURG, Wash.- The Central Washington University women's rugby team is poised and ready for a tough match against Brigham Young University. Kickoff is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. PST at the Wildcat Rugby Pitch.
The last time these two elite programs met was last April in the semi-finals of the D1 Elite Championship. The Cougars bested the Wildcats 24-10 in a hard fought battle. BYU advanced to the finals, falling to Penn State University 5-15.
"Every year is different, and this year we have a very dynamic team with plenty of depth and talented freshman," CWU head coach
Mel Denham said. "As the program builds, so does the experience of the athletes and the understanding of our systems. While we graduated a few starters from last spring, our returning players have stepped up to fill those shoes well."
The Wildcats enter Saturday's matchup familiar with hard fought battles, coming off an impressive 19-12 victory over previously National Intercollegiate Rugby Association (NIRA) #1 ranked Quinnipiac University. Central was led by the stellar play of
Cassidy Meyers, who recorded the game winning try off an offload from
Leah Ingold in the 40th minute. Meyers also recorded two conversions on the afternoon.
"Our focus and motivation is always on being the best team that we can be," Denham explained. "BYU is always great competition for us, and will be a challenging match, which is exactly what we want in order to grow and improve our game."
