ELLENSBURG, Wash. (Oct. 22) -- The Central Washington University women's rugby team led from start to finish in their Saturday afternoon fixture against Brigham Young University, winnings the match 62-12.
Â
After a feeling out process between the two teams, CWU got things going when
Kathlena Truong found the try zone off a penalty scrum from five meters out.
Â
Asinate Serevi gave CWU its second score, receiving an offload from
Suiluana A'au and marched into the try zone.
Â
Just three minutes later, A'au got her change, breaking the BYU line and stampeding 45 meters for a try. After an
Ashlee Byrge conversion, the Wildcats held a 17-0 first half lead.
Â
Serevi and Truong, finished off the scoring the first half with their second tries of the game to give the Wildcats a comfortable 27-0 halftime lead.
Â
"We set the tone with our attack, we have put in a lot of work fine-tuning our attack over the past week," CWU Head Coach
Mel Denham said. "By the end of the first half they started to dominate around the ruck with their forwards. BYU did a great job of maintain possession as we started the second half."
Â
Serevi finished off the hat trick six minutes into the second half to push the CWU advantage to 34-0.
Â
BYU started to control the ball and was able to break the CWU defense for back to back scores in the 50
th and 60
th minutes to cut the CWU lead to 34-12, but the Wildcats were not done scoring.
Â
In the final 20 minutes of action, the Wildcats scored four more times, once by A'Au and
Leah Ingold, and twice by Meyers. A number of the second-half tries were set up by Yano Manoa, who put an end to many BYU possessions with her tackling and set her teammates up for line breaks.
Â
"A player like Yana is not one of our top scorers, but she creates a lot of oppurtunites for her teammates to score," Denham said her sophomore 8-man. "She does a lot of dirty work all over the field, from winning balls in the ruck to making devastating tackles. It is that type of effort that bring the rest of the team along and allows us to win balls and use our talented back side."
Â
The Wildcats return to action next Saturday when they play host to Washington State University on Oc.t 29 at 11 a.m.
