PORTLAND, Ore. (Oct. 27) – The Central Washington University soccer team dropped a 1-0 match to Concordia University in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference matchup. The Wildcats are now 12-4-1 overall and 7-3-1 in the GNAC. The Cavaliers improve to 10-3-3 overall and 5-3-3 in the GNAC.
"Disappointed with the result today," CWU Head Coach Mike Farrand said afterward. "Concordia is playing for their playoff lives and they scored early and it took us until the second half to really get things going.
Emily Holt made some spectacular saves to keep us in it, but overall Concordia was too much for us today."
A quick strike by the Cavaliers set the tone in the 11
th minute. Kayla Braunthal beat Holt on a shot from close range, giving Concordia the only lead it would need.
The Wildcats responded with a trio of chances in between the 13
th and 19
th minutes, but the Cavaliers defense held fast.
Central got another chance in the 22
nd minute with a corner kick, but the Cavaliers cleared their lines.
Molly Mortensen put the Wildcats' second shot on frame in the 28
th minute, forcing Olivia Brock to make another save.
Another quick chance for Concordia nearly doubled the Cavaliers' lead. Maddie Misi found the framework on a low drive in the 49
th minute, but could not expand the advantage.
Back-to-back corner kicks in the 65
th minute for the Wildcats were stymied by the Cavaliers and Brock.
Mackenzie Nolte flicked a header on frame off the second corner that Brock handled.
As time wound down into single digits, Central pressed the attack.
Abbie Litka gained control near center and drove on the left wing. She cut inwards and sent a ball into the six, where multiple teammates waited, but Brock came out and collected her effort to seal the win for Concordia.
The Wildcats are back in action on Saturday (Oct. 29) against Saint Martin's in Lacey, Washington. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
