ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Central Washington University opened up its match against 11
th ranked Alaska Anchorage with a 25-21 set victory before falling to the Seawolves in 1-3 (25-21, 24-26, 18-25, 20-25) Saturday evening in Anchorage, Alaska.
The Wildcats now stand with a 15-11 record with a mark of 11-7 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. The Seawolves improve to 27-2, 17-1 GNAC.
Shelby Mauritson led the Wildcats with 15 kills while hitting .294.
Jordan Deming also hit double figures in kills with 10, hitting at a.273 mark.
Mauritson had four kills in the Wildcats first set victory that was sealed by a
Sabrina Wheelhouse kill.
Wheelhouse totaled seven kills in the match and recorded eight blocks.
"We did some good thing to keep pressure on UAA, but we just couldn't sustain an efficient offense later in the match," CWU Head Coach
Mario Andaya said. "Errors hurt us tonight, but we will go back and keep working on it. We had a lot of bright spots tonight, Shelby [Mauritson] was very good tonight, and defensively we created a lot of chances. I loved our effort tonight, but we needed to make more plays, in the end, UAA just make more plays."
Central fell behind 0-3 in the second set before battling back to take a 13-12 lead. The Wildcats held a 16-15 advantage before the Seawolves went on a 4-0 run to regain the lead. The Wildcats rattled off three points of their own and had pushed set point at 24-23, but Anchorage scored the final three points of the set to walk away with a 26-24 set victory.
Kiah Jones got the Wildcats off and running in the 3
rd with a pair of kills, and the Wildcats maintained a lead until the Seawolves used another 4-0 run to take their first lead of the set. Alaska Anchorage did not relinquish the lead again, taking the set 25-18.
After holding a brief 3-2 lead in the fourth set, the Wildcats fell behind and were unable to recapture an advantage, losing the set 25-20 and the match 1-3.
Freshman Diana Fa'amausili led the Seawolves with 15 kills followed by Leah Swiss and Chrisalyn Johnson with 14 and 13, respectively.
The Wildcats return to action for their final two matches of the regular season when they host Western Oregon University on Nov. 17 and Concordia University on Nov. 19.
