ELLENSBURG, Wash. (Nov. 25) – The Central Washington University women's basketball team fell to 4-2 following a 66-52 loss to California State University, San Bernardino.
An encouraging first quarter saw the Wildcats hold a slim margin for the majority of the opening stanza.
Taylor Baird and
Jasmin Edwards each notched four points, en route to a 13-10 advantage at the end of the first.
Baird recorded 19 points and 16 rebounds overall, with 12 points and 12 rebounds coming in the first half.
The Wildcats once again held the advantage throughout the second quarter. The Coyotes kept the score close, closing the second quarter trailing by just one point, 23-22.
Cal State San Bernardino found momentum coming out of the locker room and clasped the with the third quarter's first basket, 24-23.
A layup by Baird was followed by a three by San Bernardino's Sabrea Coleman, giving the Coyotes a slim advantage once more.
Kortney Grattic erased the two-point advantage with a pair of free throws, 27-27.
Coleman and the Coyotes expanded the lead to 35-31, but a layup from
Taylor Baird cut the deficit down to two. The Wildcats went into the final quarter trailing 42-36.
With 8:11 remaining in regulation, the Coyotes extended their lead to double digits, 46-36, and did not look back.
The Coyotes scored 13 points off of turnovers, 26 points in the paint, and 25 points from the bench. They scored 24 in the fourth quarter.
The Wildcats tallied 10 points off of turnovers, 13 second chance points, 26 points in the paint, and just eight points from the bench. Central Washington couldn't find a rhythm from beyond the arc, finishing just 2-for-17 from three-point land.
Edwards finished with 14 points and three assists.
The Wildcats are back in action on Saturday (Nov. 26) as they take on Hawaii Pacific University at 3:30 p.m.
