SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (Feb. 26) – Randy Fuller's three-run blast in the first inning set the table for the Central Washington University baseball team as they routed the Academy of Art University, 7-2, in the first game of a three-game set. The Wildcats improve to 3-3 on the season, while the Urban Knights are now 3-8.
Fuller's first round-tripper of the season was preceded by
Ryan Atkinson and
Reid Martinez reaching on errors.
Fuller finished the game 2-for-4 with a run scored and four runs driven in.
Central starting pitcher
Mackenzie Gaul (1-1) went seven strong innings, allowing just one run in the bottom of the second inning. He allowed just three hits and one walk, while striking out six hitters on 89 pitches. Gaul notched his first win of the season.
The Wildcats' offense struck again in the top of the third. Fuller hit a sacrifice fly to center field that brought Martinez home from third.
Dylan Freyre then brought in Atkinson a batter alter with another sacrifice fly to center.
Freyre finished with a pair of hits.
Brett Bovee (1-2) left after going six innings for the Urban Knights and allowing seven runs, five earned, on nine hits. He was charged with his second loss of the season.
Darren Honeysett got in on the action in the top of the sixth inning with a double to right field, scoring
Christopher Dalto. Martinez later drove in Honeysett from third on a fielder's choice.
The Urban Knights knocked home a second run in the eighth inning, but
Travis Cook was able to limit the damage over two innings of relief.
Central's hitters finished with a .333 average with runners in scoring position, while the Wildcats' pitching staff held opposing hitters to an average of .250 with runners threatening.
The Wildcats play Academy of Art University tomorrow in a doubleheader. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1 p.m. Game two will start roughly 30 minutes after the first game's conclusion.
