Fourth Quarter Lead Slips Away as Wildcats Fall to #16 APU 17-27

ELLENSBURG, Wash. (Sept. 17) – The Central Washington University football team held a 17-13 fourth quarter lead over 16th ranked Azusa Pacific University, but fell to the Cougars by a score of 27-17 Saturday afternoon at Tomlinson Stadium.

The Wildcats now stand with a 1-2 record on the season and are an even 1-1 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.  The Cougars move to 3-0 on the season and sit atop the GNAC standings with a 2-0 record.

With 6:38 left in the game, quarterback Justin Lane found Jesse Zalk in the back of the end zone to give CWU a 17-13 lead.  However, two minutes and thirty seconds later Azusa Pacific connected on a 45 yard pass to regain the lead.  After CWU turned the ball over on back-to-back possessions and another APU touchdown, the Wildcats hope of a comeback washed away.

Christian Cummings led the Wildcats with 92 yards rushing on 19 attempts.  Cummings also scored the team's first touchdown of the game on a 25-yard completion from Lane.

The Wildcats totaled 323 yards while the Cougars gained 355, and two teams were almost even on the ground with APU edging the Wildcats 143 to 140.  Azusa Pacific was efficient when they decided to pass the ball, earning 8.2 yards per attempt and 14.1 yards per completion.

Defensively the Wildcats had a strong outing with Max McIntosh and Kevin Haynes leading the charge with 13 and 12 tackles, respectively.  Senior defensive lineman Tovar Sanchez led the Wildcats with 2.5 tackles for loss, followed by McIntosh with 2.0.

Azusa Pacific quarterback Andrew Elffers completed 12 of 22 passes for 169 yards and three touchdowns.  He also rank for 60 yards on 12 attempts with a long of 48.

The Wildcats will stay at Tomlinson Stadium as they play host to Dixie State in a non-conference matchup next Saturday, Sept. 24, at 1 p.m.

QUOATABLE:

"Third down conversions was the story of the game in my opinion, on both sides of the ball for us. They made some big conversions and we had a hard time converting on our end. With that said, I feel like our defense played extremely well today, they did their job.   Offensively we have to get better at sustaining drives and allow our defense to take a breath."

-- CWU Head Coach Ian Shoemaker
