ROMEOVILLE, Ill. (Sept. 2) – The Central Washington University volleyball team fell in its first match of the season to Michigan Tech University, 0-3. Central is 0-1 on the season, while Michigan Tech moves to 1-2.
The opening set of the season was tightly contested throughout. The Wildcats staked out early two point leads, but the Huskies were able to wash them away each time. The two sides battled it out, neither team seeing momentum swing towards their side of the court until late in the set.
Madison Weg notched a kill with the score at 18-18, giving Central a 19-18 lead. The Huskies put together a five-point run, claiming a 23-19 lead. Shelby Maurtison was able to stop the run with a kill of her own, making the set 23-20.
The two sides exchanged the next three points, giving the Huskies a 25-21 win and a 1-0 advantage in the match.
The Wildcats worked to a 16-10 lead in the second set, in part due to multiple kill efforts by seniors
Kiah Jones and
Jordan Deming and sophomore
Shelby Mauritson. The Huskies battled back, levelling the set at 20-20. They outscored the Wildcats 5-2 in the final seven points of the set, giving them a 25-22 line and a 2-0 lead.
Michigan Tech took control in the final stanza of the match and did not relinquish it. The Huskies claimed set three, 25-14, to complete the sweep.
Mauritson led the Wildcats with seven kills. Jones added six, while
Madison Weg recorded five kills and four block assists.
Sabrina Wheelhouse notched kills, one solo block, seven block assists, and two aces. Freshman libero
Kyla Morgan notched 13 digs in her collegiate debut. Freshman setters
Gaby Aihara and
Nikole Cook each dished out 13 assists in their debut.
The Wildcats take on the University of Wisconsin-Parkside at 8 p.m. CDT in Romeoville, Illinois later tonight.
