Ellensburg, Wash.- The Central Washington University women's rugby team gears up for another tough test as they travel to Lethbridge, Alberta to face the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns. Action is set to kickoff this Saturday at 11 a.m., followed by another game at 3 p.m.
Â
The Wildcats opened the 2016 season last Thursday with a 12-32 loss to the University of Victoria. CWU Head Coach
Mel Denham hopes to learn from their mistakes and continue to take positive strides forward.
Â
"Our season goal is to become the best team that we can be," Denham said. "Our game last week against U Vic was really early. We had only been here for about a week and we didn't have a lot of preparation time. We realized that we have a very good platform to build from. We need to continue to build our shape on attack and continue to make good decisions at the tackle."
Â
Returning USA All-Americans Jenny Johnson,
Asinate Serevi,
Yana Manoa, Hanna Lewandowsky and
Leah Ingold will once again lead the way for the Wildcats.
Â
Ingold and Manoa were a couple of the bright spots in Central's loss to University of Victoria, each tallying a try on the day. The Wildcats will need other athletes to give similar effort if they hope to leave Saturday with a victory.
Â
The Pronghorns enter the 2016 season with high hopes after signing several notable incoming freshmen this offseason. Highlighting the list of newcomers for Lethbridge is Southern Alberta High School Rugby League (SAHSRL) All-Star Sevedyn Westrop and SAHSRL MVP Abby Neudorf.
