Seawolves Slip Past #25 Wildcats

ANCHORAGE, Alaska- The No. 25 Central Washington University women's volleyball team (15-6, 10-3 GNAC) snapped a five-match winning streaking, falling to the University Alaska Anchorage in five sets (25-21, 17-25, 26-28, 25-19, 11-15) Thursday evening in the Alaska Airlines Center.
 
Junior Shelby Mauritson led the Wildcats with 17 kills on the evening; while both Sabrina Wheelhouse (13) and Bridgette Webb (12) also tallied double-digit kill efforts. Gabrielle Aihara registered 25 assists, followed by Niki Cook with 24.
 
Sophomore libero Kyla Morgan led Central Washington with 39 digs and Mauritson followed with 22 digs to giver her another double-double on the season. Kaycee O'Brien totaled 17 digs and Cook followed with 11 digs, giving CWU four players with double-digit dig numbers.
 
Senior Sarah Joffs and Madison Weg recorded four blocks apiece to lead the Wildcats at the net. CWU totaled eight blocks as a team, but UAA led the way with 13.0 total team blocks on the afternoon.
 
In addition to blocks, the Seawolves held a slight advantage in the majority of statistical categories including: hitting percentage (.185 to .163), service aces (6 to 4), and digs (105 to 102).
 
The decisive final set consisted of six ties and two lead changes. With the score notched 7-7, the Seawolves recorded a 5-1 run to take the lead. Central Washington would go on a 3-1 run after trailing 8-12, but it would prove to be the final points the Wildcats would earn in the match. University of Alaska Anchorage would close out the match with a kill by Chrisalyn Johson to win the set 15-11 and the match 3-2.
 
The Wildcats will look to bounce back against the University of Alaska Fairbanks this Saturday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. at the Alaska Airlines Court.
