CWU Volleyball Records Second Consecutive Sweep Against Saint Martin’s

ELLENSBURG, Wash.- The Central Washington University volleyball team swept Saint Martin's University 25-9, 25-18, 25-12 on Saturday night in Nicholson Pavilion.

Saturday's victory marks Central Washington's second sweep of the weekend and ninth of the season. The Wildcats improve to 18-6 overall, and 13-3 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play. The Saints fall to 8-16 on the season and 3-13 in conference action.

"Saint Martin's attack can really get going," CWU head coach Mario Andaya said. "They have a pretty high octane offense, where they can shoot it out to the pins and run a very quick middle attack. If we didn't attack them, and keep them on their heels, they would have been able to get their offense going. That gave us a lot of trouble the last time we played them. I was really happy with how our hitters came out and changed some things up. We swung physically when we needed to and it allowed us to come away with a pretty good win."

The Wildcats were led by junior outside hitter Shelby Mauritson, who recorded 12 kills and nine digs. Sophomore Bridgette Webb tallied six kills, four blocks and a service ace. Senior Sarah Joffs registered a match-best .714 hitting percentage with five kills.

The sophomore tandem of Niki Cook and Gabrielle Aihara combined to dish out 33 assists on the evening. Sophomore libero led CWU with 15 digs, while also recording a pair of service aces.

The Wildcats hit an efficient .266 and held Saint Martin's to -.018, the lowest percentage by a GNAC foe against Central Washington this season. The Wildcats had a decisive edge in kills (35 to 25), aces (4 to 1), blocks (10 to 5), assists (33 to 23) and digs (47 to 44). Saint Martin's 25 kills were the second fewest by a Wildcat opponent this season.

Central Washington will continue GNAC play next week as they travel to Nampa, Idaho on Tuesday, Nov. 7 to face Northwest Nazarene University. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m..
