Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader in Dramatic Fashion

CALDWELL, Idaho (Feb. 19) – The Central Washington University baseball team swept its doubleheader against the College of Idaho in dramatic fashion.  The Wildcats took game one, 5-1, before tallying nine runs in the ninth inning of game two for a 9-1 victory.

The Wildcats are now 3-3 on the season, while the Yotes fall to 5-5.

Jake Levin earned his second win of the season in the opening game of the doubleheader.  The right-hander tossed 6.1 innings of one-run ball.  He struck out four hitters and allowed just one run.

The Yotes got on the board first in the bottom of the first.  A leadoff double primed the College of Idaho for a one-out single two batters later and a 1-0 advantage.

Central Washington responded in the second inning, levelling the score.  Conor Plaisance led off with a double and was singled home by Dustin Braun.

James Smith III singled to left in the top of the third, scoring Kyle Stahl and giving the Wildcats a 2-1 advantage.

The Wildcats added to their advantage in the sixth when Rory Graf-Brennen doubled home Braun on the first pitch he saw.

Central tacked on two more runs in the eighth.  Plaisance clubbed his second double of the game and was then doubled home by Braun.  Justin Hampson pinch ran for Braun and came around to score on a throwing error later in the inning.

Stahl finished 2-for-4 in game one with a run scored.  Plasiance finished 2-for-4 with a pri of runs scored.  Braun finished 3-for-4 with a run scored and two runs driven in.

Mackenzie Gaul got the call in game two for the Wildcats.  The lefty went 5.1 innings, allowing four hits, one run, and one walk, which he coupled with eight strikeouts.

Gaul and Yotes' starter Anthony Martine in an old-fashioned pitchers' duel for four innings.  The duel was briefly interrupted in the bottom of the fifth on a double down the left field line that gave the Yotes their first lead of the game, 1-0.

The pitchers' duel resumed post haste following the Yotes' lone run with both pitching staffs holding hitters to only cursory success throughout the remainder of the game, until the Wildcats' offense unleashed on the Yotes in the top of the ninth.

Levin opened the ninth with a walk.  Yi-Fan Pan laid down a sacrifice bunt, but reached on a fielding error.  Plaisance followed by drawing a full count walk, loading the bases.  Braun singled up the middle on an 0-1 pitch, scoring a pair. Central's offense didn't stop there.  Brice McCulloch pinch hit and singled home another run, before Stahl laced a pitch into left center for two more runs.

Justin Hampson then reached on a fielder's choice, scoring JJ Asinas.  Pan, in his second at-bat of the inning, singled to right to drive home Stahl.  Plaisance then singled home Hampson, before Braun roped his second hit of the inning.  Braun's double brought home Pan for a 9-1 lead over the Yotes.

Kyle Blakenship followed the Wildcats' offense by striking out the side in the bottom of the ninth.

The Wildcats are back in action on Saturday (Feb. 25) and Sunday (Feb. 26) for a four-game set against the Academy of Art University.
