CWU Baseball Drops Doubleheader to Western Oregon, 1-0 and 4-5

PORTLAND, Ore.- The Central Washington University baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against Western Oregon University on Monday, falling 1-0 in game one and 4-5 in game two.

GAME 1

The Wildcats struggled to string together hits in game one's 1-0 loss to the Wolves, managing just seven hits in 31 attempts.

Central Washington was not without their chances to take the lead. Senior Rory Graf-Brennen kicked off the eighth inning with a single to left and advanced to second following a wild pitch by the Wolves. Yi-Fan Pan earned a single of his own resulting from a well-placed bunt, but Graf-Brennen was forced to stay at second. Michael Heinevetter pinch ran for Pan and advanced to second following a bunt by Dylan Freyre. Freyre reached first on a fielder's choice, as the catcher fielded the bunt and threw it to third to get Graf-Brennen out. The following at bat featured the runners advancing following a walk by Jake Levin. With bases loaded and one out, the Wildcats grounded into a double play to end the inning.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the ninth inning when WOU's Cody Dykstra doubled down the leftfield line and then advanced to third on a fielding error. The Wolves capitalized on Central's second error of the game when Jacob Martinez drove a ball deep into centerfield to allow Dykstra to score.

Junior right-hander Griffin Davis faced 26 batters and allowed just three hits in six innings, while recording three strikeouts for the Wildcats. In addition to Davis, Tyler Hoefer (two innings pitched, one hit) and Jared Cogar (2/3 of an inning pitched, one hit) also pitched for Central.

GAME 2

Central Washington jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a run in the second inning. Two walks and a Western Oregon fielding error loaded the bases for the Wildcats with one out. A grounder to second by Graf-Brennen allowed Kyle Stahl to cross home plate for the first run of the game.

The fifth inning featured a revival of the Wildcat offensive production. Freyre kicked off the inning with a single, and advanced to second following a throwing error by the Wolves on a hard hit ball to the shortstop by Jake Levin. Conor Plaisance was hit by pitch to load the bases. Another error by the Western Oregon shortstop allowed Freyre to score and the bases remained full with no outs. The WOU coaching staff decided to make a pitching change and WOU pitcher Alex Roth struck out the first two batters he faced. Junior Michael Heinevetter singled to center field to drive in two runs and expand CWU's lead to 4-0.

Western Oregon battled back in the fifth inning to cut the Wildcat lead to 4-2 as the Wolves scored twice on three hits and a walk.

The Wolves continued to close the gap and captured their first lead in the bottom of the six, 5-4. WOU scored a total of three runs in the inning on five hits, including a two RBI double down the leftfield line by Brock Pradere.

Neither team tallied another run for the remainder of the game as Western Oregon came away with a 5-4 victory.
