ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Central Washington University softball team used a pair of one-run victories over Western Oregon to earn a sweep and extend its winning streak to nine games Saturday afternoon at Frederick Field.
The Wildcats (16-5, 9-1 GNAC) defeated the Wolves (10-11, 1-5 GNAC) 4-3 in the opener and 7-6 in the nightcap.
Senior pitcher
Kiana Wood picked up the game one victory to improve to 7-1 on the season, and earned her first save of the season in game two, hurling the final two innings, allowing just one hit.
Savannah Egbert had her best day of the season, going 4 for 6, with her first career homerun and drove in four runs.
In the opener, Egbert got the Wildcats going in the second inning, taking a 2-2 pitcher and driving it over the right centerfield wall to put CWU up 2-0. The Wildcats added two more runs in the fifth on a single by
Jacie McDaniels that scored
Sammy Morris and
Kailyn Campbell.
Western Oregon scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning, piecing together four hits, and was aided by a pair of CWU errors. Wood shut the door on WOU seventh to pick up the victory, her sixth complete game of the season.
In game two, the Wolves jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to a pair of solo homeruns by Chandler Bishop and Zoe Clark. Central Washington got on the board in the bottom of the inning on a RBI double by Egbert that scored
Celine Fowler from second base.
The Wolves added another solo shot in the third inning and took a 4-1 lead in the fourth on another CWU error.
The Wildcats exploded in the bottom of the fourth, scoring six runs on three hits and two Western Oregon defensive miscues. McDaniels picked up two more RBI on a single to left center that scored
Molly Nutt and Morris.
With the Wildcats up 7-4 in the fifth inning, Western Oregon came roaring back with a pair of runs in the frame to pull to within one of the Wildcats. With a runner on first and one out, Wood forced a ground ball to
Taylor Ferleman at second base, and the senior pioneered a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning and the game, securing the 7-6 victory.
The Wildcats return to action tomorrow when they host Concordia University for a pair of games starting at noon.
