ELLENSBURG, Wash.- Fourteen members of the Central Washington University track and field team will travel to the Bay Area to compete at the Stanford Invitational and San Francisco State University Distance Carnival. The rest of the team will compete closer to home at the Shotwell Invitational on the campus of Puget Sound University.
Â
The Wildcats competing at the Stanford Invitational are prepared to compete against some of the top athletes from around the nation. Action in Palo Alto, Calif. will kick off at the Cobb Track & Angell Field on Friday at 9 a.m. with the men's javelin. The track is a 400-meter, nine-lane, all-weather track named in honor of the Charles Cobb Family. All field event competition venues except the hammer throw are contained within the track on the Otis Chandler Infield. There are multi-direction runways for the pole vault, long jump and triple jump.
Â
"This trip is always a great opportunity for some of our most competitive student-athletes to find the right combination of conditions to produce outstanding marks and obtain new national qualifiers," CWU head coach
Kevin Adkisson said. "It also helps them gain experience competing against the kind of high-end competition they will see at the National level."
Â
Athletes representing CWU at the tenth annual SFSU Distance Carnival will begin competition on Friday at the Cox Stadium. Last season, the Distance Carnival featured teams from all three divisions as well as teams from NAIA and junior colleges. Schools from 29 states, including teams from Mexico and Canada flooded Cox Stadium to show what they could do. All told, over 1,700 athletes competed in over 2,400 events. The Wildcats can expect similar competition this year and will need to be ready come Friday.
Â
The 31st Shotwell Invitational will take place on Saturday (April 1) and will begin at 10 a.m. with the women's pole vault and high jump events.
