KENNEWICK, Wash. (Mar. 5) – The Central Washington University baseball team split the final two games of its series against Saint Martin's University, splitting the series 2-2.
The Wildcats are now 8-6 overall and 2-2 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.
"We just need to be more consistent," CWU Head Coach
Desi Storey said. "We had some good outings in games one and two yesterday, but couldn't put it together today. Then we go out and put up nine runs in game three. We need to play clean baseball."
Saint Martin's opened the scoring in game one, on a passed ball in the third inning.
Ty Deckwa struck back for the Wildcats in the bottom half, lacing a double down the line that scored
Jesse Unger.
The Wildcats put up a crooked number in the fifth inning.
Dylan Freyre opened the scoring with a single through the left side scoring
Kyle Stahl.
James Smith III then singled home
Rory Graf-Brennen. A wild pitch brought in Freyre a few pitches later.
A double by
Jake Levin brought home Smith for a 5-1 lead.
Dustin Braun then roped a double down the right field line, scoring Levin, and giving the Wildcats a 6-1 advantage.
Conor Plasiance tripled home Levin in the seventh inning, before Unger singled home Plaisance.
Griffin Davis got the win in relief. The right-hander went 4.2 innings and allowed no hits, no runs, one walk, and he struck out six hitters.
In game two, the Wildcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Smith reached on a fielder's choice, beating out a would-be 6-4-3 double play throw, scoring, Stahl. Levin then doubled home Smith.
The Saints struck back in the second, third, fourth, sixth, and seventh innings, forcing the Wildcats deep into their bullpen. They pushed one across in the second, two in the third, and one in the fourth, sixth, and seventh.
Central Washington plated two in the seventh, trailing 7-2. Levin singled to left field, allowing
Michael Heinevetter to score. Plaisance then hit an infield single, scoring Smith.
Adam Eskil held the Wildcats off and the Saints notched a 7-4 win.
Micah Richardson came on in relief and was charged with the loss. He went 2.1 innings and allowed three hits, two earned runs, one walk, and one strikeout.
Central Washington is back in action on Friday (Mar. 10) as the Wildcats travel to Northwest Nazarene University.
