TURLOCK, Calif. – The Central Washington University softball team tied a school record with its fifteenth consecutive victory in the 9-1 game one victory over Academy Art Saturday afternoon at Pedretti Sports Complex. The Wildcats dropped game two to San Francisco State by a score of 4-1 and now stand with a 22-6 record on the season.
Kylie Sweeney went all five innings in the circle for the Wildcats in the opener, allowing four hits and one earned run. Sweeney used 64 pitches, forcing 12 ground ball outs to improve to 3-0 on the season.
Central Washington led from start to finish in game one with
Kailyn Campbell opening the flood gates with a towering two-run homerun to left field in the first inning.
A
Sammy Morris double in the second plated
Rachael Johnson and
Kayla Ellis, and Campbell followed with an infield single that scored Morris from second base, giving CWU a 5-0 lead.
The Wildcats scored once more in the third inning on a ground out by Ellis that scored
Savannah Egbert, and added two more in the fourth inning on a two run single by
Taylor Ferleman to put the Wildcats up 8-0.
After Art U pieced around a tally in the fourth inning, Campbell sealed the game in the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly that plated
Molly Nutt from third base.
Freshman
Taylor Williams recorded her first loss of the season in game two, despite a very solid performance in the circle. Williams went 3.2 innings, allowing just three hits and did not walk a single batter.
The fourth inning was one to forget for Central Washington. San Francisco scored four runs in the frame, only one of which earned, with the Wildcats committing three errors, handing the Gators their four runs of the contest.
The Wildcats could not string multiple hits together, with the exception of the sixth innings when
Celine Fowler and
Taylor Ferleman reached base on singles, and
Molly Nutt drove Fowler in from second base on a single through the right side of the infield. Unfortunately, that was the final hit of the ball game, as the Wildcats dropped its first game in 16 outings.
Campbell had a big day offensively for the Wildcats going 5 for 7 with four RBI and two runs. Ferleman went # for 6 with two RBI and two runs scored. In game one, Morris was a perfect 3 for 3 with three runs scored and drove in a pair.
Central Washington wraps up its six-game stretch at the Tournament of Champions tomorrow (Apr. 2) when they play Dominican University and Sonoma State at 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., respectively.
